Chihuahua Governor Maru Campos has raised concerns on the national political stage after publicly alleging that Mexico’s Federal Attorney General’s Office (FGR) has resumed what she describes as a campaign of persecution against her. She also claimed to have received written threats targeting her personal safety, property, and family.
Allegations of Political Persecution and Diversion
Speaking to the media, the Chihuahua governor argued that these actions are part of a political strategy orchestrated by the Federal Government and the ruling party, Morena, to contain what she described as growing public awareness and civic engagement in the state. She also asserted that the accusations against her are intended to divert public attention from other major national issues.
“In my case, when they saw that many people in the country and in the state of Chihuahua were beginning to wake up, they decided to put things on hold for a while because they know the Federal Attorney General’s Office will return to persecute people… I have already received several written threats and have experienced several incidents directed against me and my property… But I am not afraid. I will continue defending Chihuahua because that is my duty and my job. That is why we are here today, working for our security personnel.”
Appearance Before the FGR Regarding Alleged CIA Agents
On May 27, 2026, Campos appeared at the FGR headquarters in Mexico City to provide a formal statement as part of the federal investigation into the discovery and dismantling of a clandestine drug laboratory in the municipality of Morelos, located in the Sierra Tarahumara region.
According to federal investigators, the operation uncovered the unauthorized presence of four alleged CIA agents, two of whom were killed in incidents that are currently under investigation by the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Although federal authorities have stated that no formal criminal charges have been filed against Campos, the governor has maintained her position, emphasizing her commitment to defending Chihuahua’s institutions and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
