Mexico Needs a Strong Institute of Legal Research, Says UNAM Rector Leonardo Lomelí
UNAM Rector Leonardo Lomelí Vanegas stated that now more than ever, both the University and Mexico need a strong Institute of Legal Research (IIJ)—one that is open to addressing emerging legal challenges and closely connected to society.
“Our country and our University are going through a period that demands the preservation and promotion of legality, transparency, equity, academic integrity, and public trust as essential principles of our institutional life,” the rector said.
During the presentation of the Fourth Activity Report by Mónica González Contró, director of the Institute of Legal Research (IIJ), Lomelí emphasized that the Institute plays a vital role in integrating legal research, academic publishing, specialized collections, teaching, public outreach, and engagement with society.
He also highlighted that those who have had the privilege of joining the Institute’s academic staff have contributed to developing critical thinking, innovation, debate, and a strong intellectual tradition surrounding legal culture as one of the most significant expressions of civilization.
Institute Reports Growth and International Recognition
Director Mónica González Contró reported that between 2022 and 2026, the Institute significantly increased the impact of its research.
She noted that:
- The Institute’s academic journals have become internationally recognized references.
- The doctoral program recorded its highest number of graduates.
- Student participation reached a historic high through the Open House Days and Summer Research Program.
- The Tijuana campus successfully consolidated its academic agenda.
Projects with Social Impact
González Contró also highlighted several initiatives with direct social impact, including:
- The Indigenous Peoples Legal Clinic
- The National Diversity Laboratory
- The Fourth Constitutional Culture Survey
- The Report on the Impact of Violence on Children and Adolescents
She added that the Institute actively participated in public discussions surrounding constitutional and legal reforms through its Enclave de Jurídicas publication series, among other initiatives.
Academic Achievements
The director emphasized that members of the Institute’s academic community have received approximately 88 national and international awards and distinctions.
Several faculty members have also held prominent positions in major legal institutions, including:
- The Inter-American Court of Human Rights
- The Committee on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families
- The Ibero-American Institute of Constitutional Law
New Research Areas
Finally, González Contró announced the creation of four new institutional research lines:
- Circular Economic Law
- Comparative Ibero-American Constitutional Law
- Labor Studies, Labor Rights, and Justice
- Human Rights and the United Nations System
With these additions, the Institute now has 19 institutional research lines, further expanding its academic and research capabilities.
