The Mexico-Querétaro highway is closed to traffic heading toward Mexico City near Kilometer 51 following a multi-vehicle collision involving a semi-truck, a van, and a car; apparently, a driver attempted to avoid a pool of accumulated rainwater.
Caminos y Puentes Federales (Capufe) reported the accident at 6:45 PM on Tuesday, confirming the involvement of the three vehicles—including a semi-truck whose trailer ended up jackknifed across the lanes of this major highway, blocking traffic flow toward the capital.
Authorities report heavy traffic and rainy conditions in the area, urging motorists to slow down and drive cautiously as they approach the accident site.
The crash occurred before the overpass in the municipality of Coyotepec, and the resulting traffic backup extends past Tepeji del Río in the state of Hidalgo.
According to official reports, rainwater had accumulated on the road; the driver of a car apparently lost control while trying to avoid the pool, crashing into the highway barrier and subsequently striking another car and the semi-truck.
No injuries have been reported; there is only material damage. The traffic backup stretches for at least 18 kilometers.
Dozens of vehicles remain at a standstill while rescue teams from Civil Protection, the Coyotepec municipal police, state police, the National Guard, the Red Cross, and Capufe personnel work at the scene.
