An intense hailstorm surprised visitors at La Marquesa National Park and motorists traveling along the Mexico-Toluca highway this Tuesday, where traffic was interrupted for several minutes due to the amount of ice that accumulated on the asphalt.
Around 2:30 p.m., in the area bordering Mexico City and the State of Mexico, a strong storm began that later turned into a hailstorm and lasted approximately 10 minutes.
The intensity of the precipitation covered the trees alongside the highway in white, as well as the extensive hills of La Marquesa, where a thick layer of hail accumulated.
Merchants in the La Marquesa food area used brooms to remove the accumulated hail from the roofs and prevent the structures from giving way under the weight of the ice.
Meanwhile, authorities activated traffic-control operations on both the free highway and the Mexico-Toluca highway.
The highway remained closed to traffic for approximately 10 minutes due to the amount of accumulated hail, which temporarily made the road impassable.
After 3:30 p.m., traffic on the free highway and the Mexico-Toluca highway returned to normal after the ice began to melt.
However, the landscape covered in white remained for several more minutes on the hills of La Marquesa National Park following the intense hailstorm recorded during the afternoon.
