Ministry of Health Confirms 33 Cases of Cyclosporiasis in Mexico
The Ministry of Health reported that 33 confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis have been identified across several states in Mexico, “which continue to be monitored through epidemiological surveillance in accordance with national protocols.”
In the United States, more than 18,000 confirmed cases and two deaths associated with the cyclosporiasis outbreak have been reported. The outbreak was initially linked to Taylor Farms, a produce packing company operating in Guanajuato.
“The analyses conducted so far by the health authorities of Mexico and the United States have not identified the presence of Cyclospora cayetanensis in the collected samples,” the Ministry of Health said in a statement.
Cyclospora cayetanensis is a microscopic single-celled parasite that infects the small intestine and causes an intestinal illness known as cyclosporiasis.
Sixteen Hotels in Quintana Roo Under Review Following U.K. Alert
Yesterday, the United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued an alert regarding reported cases of cyclosporiasis among British tourists who had visited the Riviera Maya.
In response, the Ministry of Health stated that COFEPRIS and the General Directorate of Epidemiology deployed five inspection teams, which completed health verification visits to 16 hotels in Quintana Roo. The inspections included epidemiological interviews, reviews of food handling processes, food traceability assessments, and the collection of fruit, vegetable, and water samples for specialized laboratory analysis.
“The field inspections concluded on August 4, and laboratories are currently processing the collected samples. The results will be released once the corresponding analyses have been completed,” the Ministry explained.
