Ministry of Health Confirms 33 Cases of Cyclosporiasis and Rejects Being the Source of the U.S. Outbreak
Cases of cyclosporiasis remain under epidemiological surveillance while investigations continue into reports from the United States and British travelers.
The Ministry of Health confirmed this Wednesday 33 cases of cyclosporiasis in different states across the country and stated that there is no conclusive evidence that the outbreak reported in the United States originated in Mexico.
In a statement, the health authority detailed that the cases remain under epidemiological surveillance and that investigations related to reports from the United States and British travelers who visited the Mexican Caribbean remain ongoing.
The institution stated that authorities in Mexico and the United States did not detect the parasite in samples collected from a packing facility in Guanajuato that had been identified by the U.S. government as a possible source of the outbreak, following allegations involving a lettuce packing company that supplies Taylor Farms to establishments such as Taco Bell.
“The analyses carried out so far by the health authorities of Mexico and the United States have not identified the presence of Cyclospora cayetanensis in the collected samples,” the Ministry stated.
Additionally, the agency reported that it inspected 16 hotels in the Riviera Maya, Quintana Roo, where British travelers who contracted the infection had stayed.
During the inspections, completed on August 4, epidemiological interviews were conducted, food handling processes and traceability were reviewed, and samples of fruits, vegetables, and water were collected. The results will be released once the corresponding analyses have been completed.
Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal infection that mainly causes severe and frequent diarrhea, as well as loss of appetite and weight, abdominal bloating, nausea, fatigue, low-grade fever, and vomiting.
The disease is not usually transmitted from person to person, is more common during the warmer months from May to August, and is generally associated with contaminated fruits and vegetables.
