The upcoming elevated viaduct connecting Tampico and Altamira stands as one of the most significant infrastructure projects in the history of southern Tamaulipas. With a total investment of approximately 7 billion pesos, this 4.6-kilometer “second-story” structure is designed to fundamentally transform regional mobility and alleviate the chronic traffic congestion faced by nearly one million residents in the conurbation.
Developed by the state government in partnership with the infrastructure firm Hycsa, the project is far from a conventional overpass. To address complex soil conditions, engineers have opted for deep foundations. Furthermore, the design incorporates an innovative engineering solution known as “trenzas” (braids)—specialized circulation interchanges previously utilized in cities like Pachuca and Villahermosa. These structures allow for complex traffic flow adjustments, enabling vehicles to shift lanes and directions efficiently without requiring disproportionately high or intrusive supports. A unique visual result of this design is that vehicles traveling on the upper level may appear to move in a contra-flow direction relative to the traffic below.
The route will stretch from the industrial port of Altamira toward the entrance of Maseca in Tampico, specifically concluding at kilometer 15+449. By integrating with the Libramiento Poniente and passing over the iconic “El Barquito” junction, the viaduct aims to streamline the movement of an estimated 30,000 vehicles daily, including heavy cargo traffic vital to the region’s industrial sector.
With construction starting in 2026, authorities anticipate an execution timeline of approximately two years. The project is expected to reach completion by late 2027 or early 2028. Beyond its technical specifications, this viaduct represents a strategic commitment to enhancing Tamaulipas’s logistics and tourism connectivity, positioning the state as a more competitive and accessible hub for both local commuters and national transport.
