The Deadline to Register Mobile Phone Lines Has Begun
The schedule for registering mobile phone lines has already started, and the first users have until August 15 to complete the process. Otherwise, their mobile operator may suspend service, which could affect the use of banking apps, WhatsApp, Uber, and other services.
The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (CRT) warned that carriers will have 72 hours to restrict mobile lines that remain unregistered.
The First Phone Number Endings Subject to Suspension
The CRT decided to extend the registration schedule after determining that millions of users had not yet completed the process.
As of June 25, the agency reported that 63 million mobile lines had already been linked, representing 39.1% of the estimated total, leaving approximately 98 million lines still pending registration.
To prevent all users from registering on the same day, the authority established a schedule based on the last digit of each phone number.
The first registration deadlines are:
- Ending in 0: until August 15
- Ending in 1: until August 31
- Ending in 2: until September 15
Registration will then continue for numbers ending in 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9, with staggered deadlines through December 31.
The CRT explained that the goal is to facilitate the process and prevent congestion on both digital platforms and customer service centers operated by mobile carriers.
The registration requirement applies regardless of whether the line is prepaid or postpaid and must be completed directly with the corresponding mobile service provider.
What Happens If You Do Not Register Your Line?
Failing to register a phone number does not mean the line will stop working immediately. However, mobile carriers will have 72 hours to suspend service for lines that have not been registered.
During that period, users will only be able to:
- Make calls to emergency numbers.
- Contact citizen assistance services.
- Call their own mobile operator.
- Receive earthquake alerts.
All other services, including regular phone calls, SMS text messages, and mobile data, will be unavailable.
What Happens to WhatsApp, Uber, and Banking Apps?
Suspending a mobile line does not delete accounts associated with applications such as WhatsApp, Uber, or mobile banking. However, it may affect their functionality if they require identity verification using the registered phone number.
