If you’re a fan of Asian stores and affordable bargain shopping, there’s exciting news: Daiso, one of the world’s most popular Japanese discount store chains, is preparing to enter the Mexican market and is expected to become a new competitor to Miniso.

Known in Japan as the “100-yen store,” Daiso offers thousands of affordable products for the home, stationery, kitchen, beauty, organization, and decoration. In Mexico, some items could be priced at around 20 pesos.

Retail analyst known on X as Oscar Report revealed that Daiso is preparing to launch in Mexico in September of this year. The company is expected to open its first two stores at Mundo E and Multiplaza Izcalli, both located in the State of Mexico.

According to the analyst, Daiso’s expansion will not stop there. Before the end of 2026, the company plans to open three additional stores and offer Mexican consumers a catalog of more than 17,000 products.

The history of Daiso, Japan’s “100-yen store”

Daiso was founded in Japan in 1972 by Hirotake Yano as a small mobile sales business. Five years later, in 1977, it was officially incorporated as Daiso Sangyo Co., Ltd., eventually becoming one of the world’s leading fixed-price retail chains.

Today, the company operates nearly 5,900 stores across more than 25 countries and regions, including the United States, Australia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and several Latin American markets. In addition to the Daiso brand, the company also operates Standard Products and THREEPPY.

Its catalog includes more than 100,000 products, with approximately 800 new items added every month, according to company information. The product range includes kitchenware, stationery, storage solutions, cleaning supplies, beauty products, toys, accessories, tools, and food, among many other categories.

Daiso: A new competitor for Miniso in Mexico

Daiso’s arrival in Mexico is attracting attention because it will compete in a market segment where Miniso, a Chinese retailer, has established a strong presence in recent years. Both brands appeal to consumers looking for affordable lifestyle products, although Daiso remains more focused on the traditional concept of a Japanese discount store.

So far, Daiso has not officially announced the opening date of its first Mexican stores. However, reports dating back to 2025 indicated that the company had already begun searching for distributors and business partners to support its launch in the country.
