Starlink has never been exactly the cheapest option for connecting to the internet in Mexico. In addition to paying for the satellite service every month, users must first purchase an initial kit, which considerably increases the upfront cost compared with subscribing to internet service from one of the traditional providers.
However, Elon Musk’s satellite internet has become increasingly popular, with speeds that can exceed 400 Mbps on its home plans and one particular advantage: it can provide connectivity to places where fiber-optic service is not available. Now, Starlink is looking to make its service more accessible in Mexico with a new promotion.
Starlink Lowers the Price of Its Mini Kit in Mexico
According to information published by Starlink, the company is offering the Starlink Mini Kit starting at 399 pesos in selected areas of Mexico when customers sign up for a 12-month residential plan. This is a promotional price for the hardware, so the internet service is paid separately each month.
The kit includes the Starlink Mini antenna with an integrated Wi-Fi router, as well as a stand, pipe adapter, 15-meter power cable, power supply, and plug. One of its main differences compared with the standard model is its compact and portable size, designed to make installation and transportation easier.
The discount is considerable when taking into account that, without the promotion, the Starlink Mini Kit costs 4,999 pesos. This significantly reduces the initial amount needed to begin using the service.
Currently, Starlink offers different prices for its home plans, but the promotion can also reduce the monthly service fee. In selected areas, the company shows a rate starting at 950 pesos per month, in addition to the hardware starting at 399 pesos. Outside of this offer, the Residential Lite plan starts at 1,050 pesos per month, with speeds of up to 200 Mbps, while Residential Max costs from 1,350 pesos per month and can reach speeds of up to 400 Mbps or more.
The company clarifies that these speeds are not guaranteed and may decrease during periods of high demand.
How Much Does It Cost to Subscribe to Starlink in Mexico With the 399-Peso Promotion?
Getting satellite internet in Mexico is becoming less expensive. Unlike traditional providers, which use their own infrastructure, Starlink requires customers to purchase an antenna and router to connect to its satellite network. The advantage is that it can provide internet access to places where terrestrial infrastructure does not yet exist.
With the new promotion, that cost is reduced, and Starlink is beginning to approach the prices of other internet services. Telmex has packages starting at 389 pesos per month, while Totalplay offers options starting at 390 pesos per month with prompt payment, and Izzi has packages starting at 579 pesos.
In Starlink’s case, if the customer’s address has both the 399-peso Mini Kit and the promotional service starting at 950 pesos per month available, beginning to use Starlink would cost as little as 1,349 pesos for the equipment and the first month, not including any other charges that may appear during the subscription process.
However, the situation can be completely different in other areas. When checking an address in Mexico City where the promotion is not available, the Starlink Mini Kit costs 4,999 pesos, plus a 17,000-peso demand surcharge, as well as 475 pesos for shipping and handling. In that case, the cost of the equipment and associated charges reaches 22,474 pesos, before adding the monthly service fee.
This surcharge is not charged at every address. Starlink explains that it is a one-time payment to activate service in high-demand areas, meaning it can considerably increase the cost of getting started with the service.
The company also does not publicly disclose which areas of Mexico offer the Mini Kit for 399 pesos. Therefore, to find out whether the promotion is available, customers must visit the Starlink website and enter their home address. There, the equipment price, available plans, and any additional charges are displayed before placing the order.
