Pablo Gutiérrez Lazarus Accuses Security Secretary of Evading Responsibility for Public Safety in Campeche
The mayor on leave of Ciudad del Carmen and current state coordinator for the defense of the Fourth Transformation, Pablo Gutiérrez Lazarus, accused the head of the Secretariat of Citizen Protection and Security (SPSC), Marcela Muñoz Martínez, of evading responsibility for managing public security in the state.
The gubernatorial hopeful’s statements came in response to Muñoz Martínez’s appearance before the Campeche Congress, where the official classified the municipal board of Sabancuy as a high-conflict area.
“We have been respectful toward them despite many circumstances that we do not agree with: very unusual management of security strategies that do not seem to be the most appropriate. I believe that control is getting out of her hands; she creates smoke screens, generates information to suit her purposes, and blames others. Public security in the state is never her responsibility,” Gutiérrez Lazarus stated in a social media broadcast.
The mayor on leave also held the head of the SPSC responsible for the state police strike that took place between March and June 2024. The protest stemmed from an operation at the Kobén prison that left police officers injured and resulted in allegations of physical and sexual assaults.
“We saw what happened when there was a state police strike in the state capital: how many days she left the police officers [without support]; she did not care about the police,” he denounced.
Gutiérrez Lazarus questioned the assessments issued by the SPSC regarding Ciudad del Carmen and denounced irregularities in the deployment of state forces in the municipality.
“She always says that we are the red flag, that we are the municipality that causes problems. She blames our municipal police because it is divided into quadrants, and that is false: we see the state police everywhere, not in quadrants, and setting up checkpoints arbitrarily,” he added.
Muñoz Martínez Remains in State Cabinet
Muñoz Martínez’s continued presence in the state cabinet remains unchanged despite requests for her dismissal submitted by police officers following the events at Kobén. Governor Layda Sansores ratified the official in her position, having previously worked with her when the Morena politician headed the Álvaro Obregón mayor’s office in Mexico City.
