Experts from the Epidemiology Directorate and the Federal Commission for Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris) arrived in Quintana Roo to investigate reports of cyclosporiasis infections reported by the government of the United Kingdom. Governor Mara Lezama highlighted the rapid response of the federal government to address these cases after the United Kingdom reported 67 cases of cyclosporiasis, known as “explosive diarrhea,” among people who returned from Mexico between April 30 and July 15, most of whom had stayed in Cancún and the Riviera Maya.
In response, the Ministry of Health issued a statement announcing that it would immediately inspect the establishments involved. The agency assured that, so far, none of the tests conducted have detected the parasite that causes the disease. Governor Mara Lezama said that it must be verified whether the infections actually occurred in Quintana Roo, since the people involved in the reported cases traveled to several destinations.
“We have to remain coordinated; they need to inform us so that we can act and obtain results as soon as possible, to determine whether it happened here,” the state governor added.
Cyclosporiasis, which manifests itself as prolonged diarrhea, is difficult to trace because it can appear up to 14 days after consuming food contaminated with the parasite.
