A boxing festival is taking place this weekend in Oaxaca, featuring a major celebration of the so-called sport of “cauliflower ears,” with preparation bouts involving boxers from Oaxaca, Chiapas, and Guatemala at the Team Chirino gym in San Sebastián Tutla, Oaxaca. Intense sessions began yesterday and will continue through Saturday before concluding on Sunday.
Approximately 200 boxers from children’s, youth, and elite categories are taking part in fierce, hard-fought, and electrifying bouts in the ring at the boxing facility. Boxers from different regions of Oaxaca are also participating as representatives of the host state.
Chiapas alone has sent nearly 75 children and young athletes from different weight divisions. The delegation arrived in the Oaxacan capital on a fully occupied bus, while others traveled independently.
As a result, the action at the Team Chirino ring began Friday at 9:00 a.m. and continued until nighttime. A space inside the same gym was also arranged as a dining area for all the competitors.
STRENGTHENING COMPETITIVE EXPERIENCE
In an interview, Elmer Miranda Parra, president of the Oaxacan Boxing Association, explained that the main purpose of the activity is to give Oaxacan boxers greater competitive experience in preparation for upcoming major national and even international events.
“With Guatemala’s visit, the activity began on August 10. In the mornings we have held training sessions and in the afternoons sparring sessions. This is an activity supported by Indeporte Oaxaca, and I thank its director, Arturo de Jesús Chávez Ramírez, for that support,” he said.
The president of the state association added that Oaxacan boxers are preparing to represent their state at the upcoming National Olympic Festival, which will be held in Oaxtepec, Morelos, next September.
Boxers who will be part of the Mexican national team at the upcoming BoxAm International Tournament 2026, scheduled to take place in Alicante, Spain, from August 31 to September 6, also participated in the event.
It is worth noting that Mexico will be represented by boxers Ximena Dector, from Huajuapan de León; Genesis Cruz, from Huatulco; and Deni García, from Villa de Zaachila.
POWER IN EVERY PUNCH
For now, the boxing event in Oaxaca has featured bouts marked by tremendous determination, solid contact, skill in every movement inside the ring, technique, and power in every punch.
Once they step into the ring, the boxers show their character and engage in intense exchanges. As a result, there is very little that feels “friendly” about these matchups. Given the nature of the sport, spectators have been treated to strong and highly competitive fights.
Finally, Elmer Miranda added that Oaxaca is scheduled to return the visit to Guatemala next November, an event that has already received approval from the Mexican Boxing Federation. The delegation traveling to the Central American country would include the champions and runners-up of the 2026 State Open Championship.
It is also worth mentioning that following this competition between Guatemala, Chiapas, and Oaxaca, several of the participating boxers will also step into the ring at a tournament scheduled for Sunday in Tlacolula de Matamoros, Oaxaca.
