Oaxaca is once again placing coffee at the heart of its agricultural and cultural diversity. With 700 samples received, 74 booths, over 120 producers, and 30 buyers from across the country, the 2026 Oaxacan Coffee Convention kicked off this Friday—an event seeking to connect beans produced in the state’s various regions with new markets.
On August 14 and 15, the Plaza de la Danza is transforming into a space to explore the diverse profiles of Oaxacan coffee: its aromas, flavors, nuances, and production methods. In addition to exhibitions and sales, the program features presentations, panel discussions, and coffee tasting stations.
A highlight of this edition is the auction of 30 specialty coffee microlots, selected through a cupping and sensory evaluation process. These small batches showcase the diverse flavor profiles found in coffees grown in Oaxaca.
At the opening ceremony, Governor Salomón Jara Cruz highlighted how the soil, climate, and altitude of the state’s various regions enable the production of coffees with unique characteristics—qualities also resulting from the hard work of thousands of families dedicated to coffee farming.
Behind the convention’s statistics lies a vast community: more than 80,000 Oaxacan families are engaged in coffee production. Much of this activity relies on organic and shade-grown farming systems—practices linked to both ecosystem conservation and the identity of coffee-growing communities.
This edition also serves as a meeting point for producers and buyers. The 30 buyers arriving from various states are looking to discover and purchase coffees with distinctive qualities, while producers have the opportunity to establish new commercial connections. As part of the program, technical equipment for coffee processing was presented to a field school in Pluma Hidalgo, and recognition was given to the top-performing samples in the classic-washed and experimental categories, which scored 89.81 and 88.44 points, respectively.
The 2026 Oaxacan Coffee Convention continues this Saturday, August 15, from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Plaza de la Danza, featuring activities designed to explore, taste, and connect with a beverage that is integral to the daily lives and economies of many Oaxacan communities.
Beyond the cup itself, the event highlights a chain of knowledge: the land, the labor of farmers, cultivation and processing techniques, and the search for new audiences for a coffee that embodies the landscapes and identities of Oaxaca’s regions.
Key fact: 74 booths, over 120 producers, and 30 buyers from across the country are participating in the 2026 Oaxacan Coffee Convention.
