The Hermanos Serdán International Airport, located in Huejotzingo, announced a strategic reorganization of its air connectivity network beginning December 1, 2026. The airline Volaris will cancel its routes to Ixtapa, San Luis Potosí, and León because they failed to reach the minimum occupancy levels required for profitability, set at an average of 85%.

Instead, the airline will open three new connections: Acapulco, Puerto Escondido, and a direct international route to Chicago (O’Hare), aimed at serving the high demand from the migrant communities of Jalisco and the Mixteca region.

According to what was announced at a press conference by Governor Alejandro Armenta Mier and Tourism Development Secretary Carla López-Malo, the new routes will provide approximately 85,000 additional seats.

The domestic routes to Acapulco and Puerto Escondido will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, while the Puebla–Chicago flight will officially begin operating on December 2, with flights on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. At the same time, the state government is preparing to implement the “Visit Your Family” program through the Puebla Institute for Migrant Assistance, which will raffle airline tickets among low-income families.

As part of the comprehensive plan to strengthen the competitiveness of Puebla’s air transportation network, authorities confirmed a modernization project for the Huejotzingo terminal involving an investment of 1 billion pesos to be carried out between 2026 and 2027.

The executive plan is currently being evaluated by the firm Mundo Maya with contributions from the public and private sectors. Parallel investments in the Tehuacán airport have been ruled out in order to concentrate passenger flows at the central hub.
