People born in the United States whose father or mother is Mexican can obtain dual citizenship through the “Soy México” program, according to Brenda Gutiérrez Vega, director of the Civil Registry of the State of Colima.
“For Mexican-American people, we have the Soy México program. It is for those who were born in the United States and have the right to hold dual citizenship; in other words, they can be American and, at the same time, Mexican,” she explained.
Gutiérrez Vega stated that interested individuals must go to the offices of the State Civil Registry Directorate and present, among other documents, their U.S. birth certificate.
The official explained that during the process, the documentation and the applicant’s identity are reviewed in order to prevent cases of identity theft or identity fraud.
“All of this coordination, in which we review everything together with them, is precisely to ensure and provide certainty regarding the legal identity of all individuals,” she added.
She recalled that the right to Mexican nationality for people born abroad who have a Mexican father or mother is recognized in the Constitution. Therefore, those who meet the requirements can apply for the corresponding procedure.
Finally, Brenda Gutiérrez stated that the State Civil Registry offices are located on León Felipe Street, at the corner of 27 de Septiembre, in the Lomas Verdes neighborhood of Colima City, and provide service Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
