Members of the Independent Union of Workers of Nacional Monte de Piedad (NMP) held a protest outside the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), asking the justices to return to the Collegiate Court the review proceeding related to the declaration that the pawnshop institution’s strike was legally nonexistent.
As part of case 502/2026, the full Supreme Court was scheduled to vote Monday on whether to take up the case, which was among the first matters on the docket for discussion.
Rafael Loyo Bandín, the independent union’s secretary of Finance, said they would seek to have a delegation admitted to the hearing.
“The case file should be returned to the Collegiate Court so that it can resolve it; this is not a matter that falls under the Supreme Court because it is not a constitutional issue,” he said.
The dispute arose after a district judge granted an injunction to NMP’s administration in February and, through that ruling, determined that the strike was “nonexistent.” The strike has now lasted almost 11 months.
The case was sent to the Supreme Court by a Collegiate Court specializing in labor matters at the request of the National Union of Workers of Nacional Monte de Piedad, headed by Arturo Zayún.
In this context, workers from the pawnshop institution who came from Veracruz, Jalisco, Monterrey, and the State of Mexico, among other locations, are demanding an end to the strike and the resumption of operations at more than 300 branches.
As part of the protest, the workers also submitted a letter to the citizen services office of the Presidency of the Republic, alleging that while workers have gone 11 months without receiving their salaries, union leader Arturo Zayún has “failed to provide an accounting” of the resources he manages, including funds provided by the institution under the collective bargaining agreement.
“In reality, these are economic interests. Monte de Piedad demanded that the striking secretary provide an accounting because he receives substantial financial assistance, but the union leader does not want to account for it,” the protesters stated.
