The United States ambassador to Mexico, retired Colonel Ronald Johnson, said Thursday that both countries are “turning shared priorities into concrete actions,” referring to the meeting held yesterday in Washington between Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
In a message posted on the social media platform X, Johnson said that the meeting between the two officials “reflects” their commitment to working together to stop irregular migration, combat fentanyl trafficking, and “weaken cartels and narcoterrorist organizations.”
The Washington envoy added that, through “close coordination and decisive actions,” both nations will continue delivering results that make them “safer” and “more prosperous,” under the leadership of U.S. President Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.
Yesterday, Velasco and Rubio held their first formal meeting. Following the meeting, Foreign Minister Velasco said that bilateral cooperation must be based on sovereignty and “collaboration without subordination,” while Rubio called for “decisive actions” to dismantle cartels and terrorist organizations.
Velasco wrote on social media that they reviewed “progress in security matters” and joint efforts against drug and arms trafficking, as well as continuing the dialogue on the human rights of Mexican migrants in the United States.
