In a coordinated effort to strengthen the agricultural and livestock sector and provide new opportunities for the socioeconomic development of young people in the state, the Autonomous University of Tamaulipas (UAT), together with the Secretariat of Rural Development, announced that the expansion of the Beekeeping Diploma Program to the municipalities of Nuevo Laredo and Altamira is currently underway.
This initiative comes as a direct response to the high demand and successful reception of the first generation in Ciudad Victoria, where dozens of students successfully completed a rigorous theoretical and practical program designed to transform regional beekeeping.
How will the arrival of the diploma program benefit other municipalities such as Nuevo Laredo and Altamira?
The extension of this diploma program to Nuevo Laredo and Altamira will decentralize technical training and bring specialized knowledge to more families across Tamaulipas. During 14 weeks of training, participants will learn not only the responsible and biosecure management of beehives, but also the production of honey derivatives.
Why is comprehensive training essential for the success of local beekeeping?
State authorities emphasized that beekeeping goes beyond simply purchasing bees and beehives; it requires in-depth knowledge of insect biology, nutrition, health, and management techniques. For this reason, the Secretariat of Rural Development combines academic training with the delivery of technological and nutritional packages.
Upon completion of the program, outstanding graduates will also have the opportunity to receive comprehensive equipment consisting of 10 bee colonies, 11 kilograms of foundation wax, protective clothing—including a coverall, veil, and gloves—along with a smoker, hive tool, and ongoing technical assistance.
This support ensures that new beekeepers in the northern and southern regions of the state can launch solid, self-sustaining productive projects that generate local employment.
What economic and commercial impact will honey production have for Tamaulipas producers?
The professionalization of the sector opens the door to high-value markets, particularly through a historic export project to the United States involving up to 78 tons of honey, which could potentially double—approximately 100 percent increase—the income of beekeepers compared with the domestic market.
To complete this shipment, the extraction facility located in the municipality of Llera will be used to standardize the production and meet the high quality standards required.
With government funding of approximately 7 million pesos and incentives for SMEs, the Secretariat is facilitating registration and commercialization in locations such as the Torre Bicentenario, helping secure a prosperous future for Tamaulipas’ agricultural producers.
