OJOCALIENTE, ZACATECAS — Authorities in Zacatecas suspect the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) is behind a car bomb attack that targeted the Municipal Police Command of Ojocaliente on the evening of Sunday, August 30. The explosion injured ten people—two police officers and eight civilians—and damaged 17 nearby structures in the surrounding urban area.
State Attorney General Cristian Paul Camacho Osnaya revealed in a media interview that the primary line of investigation points to a direct retaliation by the CJNG following the arrest of one of its alleged hitmen just 24 hours prior.
Arrest Triggers Explosive Retaliation
The suspect, identified as 18-year-old William “N,” was apprehended on Saturday during a joint security operation between Zacatecas and Aguascalientes forces in the neighboring municipality of Asientos. William “N” allegedly opened fire on municipal officers and later confessed during processing to being an active gunman for the CJNG.
“We cannot rule out that this attack was a direct reaction to the arrest of William ‘N’,” Camacho Osnaya stated. Supporting this theory, forensic investigators discovered that one of the vehicles linked to Sunday’s attack carried a serial number tied to a violent carjacking reported in Jalisco earlier in April 2026.
The device used in the Ojocaliente bombing was an improvised explosive—a pipe bomb filled with compressed gunpowder—detonated shortly after the vehicle was parked in front of the police station. The shockwave caused widespread destruction to windows, facades, and nearby residential properties, injuring several civilians inside their own homes.
Escalating Campaign Against Security Forces
The Ojocaliente bombing represents the third explosive attack targeting law enforcement in southern Zacatecas in less than a week. On August 27, two state police officers were injured by improvised explosives along Federal Highway 54 in Tabasco municipality, triggering an eight-hour highway closure. On Saturday, an explosive-laden motorcycle detonated near the Villa García border before William “N” was taken into custody.
In response to the surge in cartel violence, Ojocaliente Mayor Juan Manuel Zambrano suspended all classes across the municipality until further notice. Local authorities also canceled the ongoing Grape and Prickly Pear Fair (Feria de la Uva y de la Tuna), including its annual royal coronation. State security forces, alongside the National Guard and Mexican Military, have deployed reinforced patrols across the region to locate the perpetrators.
