The mayor of Uruapan, Grecia Quiroz, accused political actors of seeking to derail her project to run for governor of Michoacán as an independent candidate through audits, complaints, budget cuts, reforms, and smear campaigns.
Grecia Quiroz said she will continue with the movement led by Carlos Manzo despite the obstacles she alleges are being placed in her path to compete as an independent candidate for the governorship of Michoacán.
The mayor of Uruapan, Grecia Quiroz, denounced that there is an attempt to “get her out of the way” because of her intention to run as an independent candidate for the governorship of Michoacán in 2027.
Quiroz is one of the figures who has expressed her intention to compete for the state government through an independent candidacy. She denounced that she is facing a series of political, legal, and administrative obstacles that, from her perspective, are intended to block her path to the election.
A day after the Supreme Court’s ruling regarding the independent candidacy, Grecia Quiroz hardened her rhetoric. The mayor denounced what she considers an offensive against her and linked recent events to the political growth she attributes to her movement.
Quiroz revived an idea that, according to her explanation, Carlos Manzo used to describe the risks faced by those who challenge certain political structures:
“For those of us who have decided to remain firm, free, and transparent in this struggle, only three paths seem to remain: death, prison, and success.”
The municipal president said that the progress she claims to be registering in polls has provoked a reaction from her adversaries.
Although she did not identify specific officials or political parties as responsible for the actions she denounced, she stated that institutional and political tools were allegedly being used to stop her project.
“Now that the numbers no longer add up for them, now that the polls are beginning to reflect what many do not want to accept, they have begun to use everything within their reach: audits, complaints, budget cuts, legal reforms, smear campaigns, and systematic attacks,” she accused.
Quiroz, who assumed the municipal presidency of Uruapan following the assassination of her husband, Carlos Manzo, in November 2025, has insisted on keeping the political project of the Independent Sombrero Movement alive and competing outside traditional party structures.
In recent months, she confirmed that there are possibilities that the movement could appear on the 2027 ballot and has rejected joining a political party to fulfill her political aspirations.
Grecia Quiroz warns that they want to send her to prison
The mayor went even further and publicly raised the possibility that new accusations could emerge against her. Quiroz said she would not rule out an attempt to build a case against her in order to remove her from the political race.
“Do not be surprised if tomorrow they try to fabricate any accusation in an attempt to send me to prison,” she warned.
The statement comes at a particularly complicated moment for the municipal president. In addition to the dispute over electoral rules, information emerged this week about an investigation related to the murder of Carlos Manzo that reaches into the political and personal circle of the former mayor.
Quiroz has interpreted the accumulation of these episodes as part of an offensive against her, although her claims of political persecution are her own allegations and, by themselves, do not establish that the investigations or institutional decisions are part of a coordinated operation to prevent her candidacy.
Quiroz also issued a warning regarding those currently promoting accusations against her. According to the mayor, it will be necessary to observe whether they later receive candidacies, public positions, or political benefits.
“And do not be surprised if those who are accusing, attacking, or denouncing today are rewarded tomorrow with a candidacy, a position, or some political favor. Just watch. Time puts everyone in their place,” she stated.
