The storm that affected the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area on Thursday afternoon and evening left flooding, stranded vehicles, and moments of tension among the affected population.
Around 6:00 p.m., the storm took shape on the border between Guadalajara and Tlaquepaque, in the Cerro del Tesoro area. It quickly spread northwest toward downtown Guadalajara and southwest toward Santa Anita Tepatitlán in Zapopan.
By 7:00 p.m., the storm covered practically the entire Guadalajara metropolitan area, varying in intensity from moderate to locally strong and severe.
Jalisco Civil Protection warned that the rainfall had the potential to cause flooding in low-lying areas and underpasses in Tlaquepaque, Guadalajara, and Tlajomulco.
Rain Complicated Mobility in Guadalajara
One of the most critical incidents occurred at the intersection of Avenida Revolución and Calle Corregidora, in the La Loma neighborhood, where personnel from the Municipal Coordination of Civil Protection and Firefighters responded to reports of multiple vehicles trapped by the sudden rise in water.
Upon arrival, the Guadalajara rescuers confirmed the presence of a Route 231 public transportation bus that became completely immobilized with 25 passengers on board due to the water level.
“We found a public transportation vehicle with 25 people inside, none of whom were injured. We do not have anyone experiencing a crisis; we spoke with them to keep them calm and carried out maneuvers to rescue them,” the municipal agency reported in a statement regarding the assistance operations carried out.
At the same location, two vehicles had collided after being swept away by the current, although fortunately no injuries were reported at this specific site.
The effects of the rainfall also affected mass transportation, with significant flooding in the Miravalle area that temporarily forced the suspension of Macrobús service between the Gobernador Curiel and Artes Plásticas stations. Likewise, roads traditionally affected by flooding, such as San Carlos neighborhood and Avenida Washington, experienced considerable water accumulation before the intensity of the storm decreased.
By around 9:00 p.m., the rain had decreased in intensity and dispersed radially toward the outskirts of the metropolitan area. Cleanup and sanitation efforts continued into the early hours of Friday.
