The 2026 edition will begin on October 4 and, for the first time, will feature activities throughout the entire state, just minutes from Puebla
For the first time in its history, the International Tlaxcala Puppet Festival will have a presence in all 60 municipalities of the state, reported Ignacio Tapia Echávarri, director of the “Rosete Aranda” National Puppet Museum (Munati).
This year’s edition will begin on October 4 and will bring performances to communities, neighborhoods, and public spaces, expanding access to puppet theater beyond traditional cultural venues.
Puppet Festival expands throughout Tlaxcala
Tapia Echávarri emphasized that the territorial coverage of this edition is unprecedented, since previous editions had only included some municipalities without reaching the entire state.
“This work of puppet theater in communities and parks is precisely part of its origins as popular theater and theater for the people,” explained the director of Munati.
The festival will continue the “Puppets in the Neighborhood” program, an initiative that last year brought performances to different neighborhoods in Huamantla, receiving a favorable response from the public.
This model will be replicated during the 2026 edition, bringing performances to parks and communities so that families will not have to travel to the main venues, less than two hours from Puebla City.
Tlaxcala puppeteers strengthen national ties
Connections with other festivals are also growing: representatives of 11 puppet festivals from across the country met in Tlaxcala last year to commemorate the 35th anniversary of Munati.
That meeting led to an additional festival and made it possible to identify opportunities for the exchange of exhibitions, performances, and collections among institutions dedicated to puppet theater.
The museum’s director revealed that there are requests from institutions interested in replicating Munati exhibitions, following an exhibition recently presented in Monterrey, Nuevo León.
However, he did not provide details about possible new venues, considering that these projects should only be announced once they have been formally finalized.
