Sheinbaum responds to Trump after post showing Mexico covered by U.S. flag
President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo responded to Donald Trump after the U.S. president posted an image on Truth Social showing Mexico on a map covered with the United States flag.
Sheinbaum rejected any idea of Mexico being subordinate and affirmed that the country will maintain its sovereignty.
“In the month of our homeland, we reaffirm that Mexico is not and will not be a colony or protectorate of any foreign country. We are proudly a free, independent, and sovereign country,” the president said.
The president shared her message just minutes after Trump’s post. She reiterated one of the principles that has defined her relationship with the U.S. government: maintaining a relationship based on respect, coordination, and national sovereignty.
Sheinbaum has stated on various occasions that Mexico seeks to cooperate with the United States but will not accept a relationship of subordination.
The president has also placed the self-determination of peoples among the principles of her government.
Trump sparks controversy again with posts about Mexico
The new controversy emerged just days after Trump shared another map on social media and referred to the state of New Mexico as “New America.”
The U.S. president also spoke about Mexico on September 4 from the Oval Office. On that occasion, he claimed that the country had nothing to offer the United States other than “hot tamales and tomatoes.”
Although Trump said that he does not intend to disrupt the trade relationship with Mexico and stated that he maintains a good relationship with Sheinbaum, his remarks prompted reactions from Mexican politicians.
Sheinbaum and Trump maintain a relationship based on coordination
In response to the U.S. president’s statements and posts, Sheinbaum has insisted that Mexico can maintain a close relationship with the United States without giving up its independence.
The president has therefore defended Mexico’s sovereignty as a central principle of the bilateral relationship, while both governments maintain channels of dialogue and coordination on various issues.
