Resources allocated to road infrastructure in Sonora between 2021 and 2026 total more than 20 billion pesos, including contributions from the state and federal governments, the Mexican Navy, and the private sector.
With the support of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo and the Government of Mexico, Governor Alfonso Durazo Montaño is promoting a historic investment of more than 20 billion pesos to expand, modernize, and maintain Sonora’s road infrastructure, with strategic projects connecting the Pacific with Chihuahua and the border with the United States.
The road infrastructure strategy makes it possible to address backlogs accumulated over decades and strengthen key routes for the economy of northwestern Mexico by improving land connections to the Port of Guaymas, border areas, major urban centers, mining regions, and tourist destinations.
From 2021 to 2026, resources allocated to road infrastructure exceed 20 billion pesos: 2.19 billion pesos in state investment, 15.159 billion pesos from the Government of Mexico, 1.946 billion pesos from the Mexican Navy, and 800 million pesos in private investment.
Strategic projects to connect Sonora with Chihuahua and the border
Among the strategic projects is the Guaymas–Chihuahua highway, with an investment of more than 10 billion pesos, strengthening the land route from the Port of Guaymas to Chihuahua and northern Mexico.
This connection expands Sonora’s logistical capabilities and creates better conditions for the movement of goods, trade, and investment.
In the mountainous region, the Bavispe–Janos–Nuevo Casas Grandes highway, with 1.859 billion pesos, and the Agua Prieta–Bavispe highway, with 1.571 billion pesos, strengthen transportation links between Sonora and Chihuahua, reduce travel times, and bring communities closer together that for decades faced conditions of isolation.
