Puebla could have a Huehue Day beginning February 10, 2027, along with a municipal registry to record the groups that preserve this tradition in different neighborhoods.
The proposal includes bringing the dance groups together at a festival and creating a gastronomic, cultural, and commercial corridor in the city’s historic center.
The project is based on an estimate of around 15,000 huehues in the capital of Puebla and approximately 150 groups that participate in the celebrations.
The registry would make it possible to identify the groups and establish a record to strengthen their protection and recognition, as well as to highlight the different expressions of this tradition.
Representatives of the La Poderosa and Xonaca groups, Luis David Nava and José Carlos Méndez, supported the initiative and emphasized the importance of preserving the costumes, dances, and community participation.
The current celebration includes a three-day festival featuring dances in the streets of the Historic Center, one of the main areas where this tradition is concentrated during the season.
In addition to the festival, the initiative seeks to take advantage of the presence of visitors to promote a corridor featuring food, cultural activities, and local commerce in the Historic Center.
The proposal was supported by Paola Torroella, president of the Poblano Gastronomic Club, who proposed incorporating local products and establishments into the project.
Councilman Andrés Cerón Salas is promoting the official establishment of Poblano Huehue Day and wants the festival to include participants from different neighborhoods of the municipality.
The initiative seeks to give a tradition present in different neighborhoods and districts a specific date within Puebla’s cultural calendar, while also generating greater citizen participation.
The proposal is still in the planning stage to establish the celebration beginning in February 2027. Its objective is to combine the preservation of the tradition with cultural and commercial activities.
