UNAM Approves Creation of the Center for Earth and Space Research
During an ordinary session, the plenary of the University Council of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) unanimously approved the transformation of the Michoacán Unit of the Institute of Geophysics (IGUM) into the new Center for Earth and Space Research (CITE).
The decision strengthens research focused on hazards and risks caused by natural phenomena; geothermal energy; geomorphology; geomagnetism and environmental geophysics; and heliophysics and space weather.
Following the presentation of the reasons supporting the proposal and the participation of representatives from various university bodies who expressed their support, the university’s highest governing collegiate body approved the transformation. It also approved the corresponding amendments to Article 9 of Title Two and Article 106, Section I, of Title Eight of the UNAM General Statute.
The decision represents a major milestone for the state’s scientific infrastructure, responding to the growing social demand for high-level academic spaces capable of promoting knowledge generation from the western region of Mexico.
The creation of the new center also responds to UNAM’s longstanding commitment to the decentralization of knowledge, strengthening the university’s presence outside Mexico City through spaces dedicated to training highly qualified specialists with scientific and cutting-edge profiles.
This work is supported by a faculty made up of internationally recognized researchers dedicated to the study of Earth and space phenomena. It also reflects the university’s social commitment through projects aimed at addressing territorial and environmental problems and preventing risks, benefiting the people of Michoacán.
The project is the result of more than 20 years of work in the state and represents an effort to consolidate UNAM’s scientific and academic presence in the region.
With the creation of the Center for Earth and Space Research (CITE), UNAM reaffirms its commitment to regional development by providing Michoacán with an institution with greater operational and academic autonomy to address the scientific challenges of the 21st century.
