The United States government is reportedly evaluating possible actions against Mexican cartels within Mexican territory without previously notifying the Government of Mexico, according to an internal State Department document obtained by News Nation.
According to the report, the fact sheet classifies the cartels as a “direct threat” to U.S. security and outlines various options for combating criminal organizations that Washington has designated as foreign terrorist organizations.
Poll Supports Actions Against Cartels
According to the document cited by News Nation, a survey of 1,000 Mexicans over the age of 18, conducted by a local research firm, found that the majority of participants would support U.S. actions against criminal groups operating in Mexico.
The measures mentioned include:
- Formal U.S. accusations against Mexican officials allegedly linked to cartels.
- Operations against suspected drug traffickers in the Caribbean and Pacific.
- Attacks against drug laboratories or arrests of cartel members in Mexico without notifying the Mexican government.
- U.S. military operations against suspected members of criminal organizations on Mexican territory.
Document Details Cartel Presence in Mexico
The leaked information includes a map showing the areas where different criminal groups operate in the country, with references to organizations such as the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).
It also describes activities attributed to these organizations, including drug trafficking, kidnappings, homicides, and clashes between rival groups.
Recent Acts of Violence Cited
The fact sheet obtained by News Nation refers to several recent incidents recorded in Mexico.
Among them is the car-bomb attack outside police facilities in Zacatecas, described as the third attack involving explosives against security agencies in less than a week.
The document also mentions videos that have not been officially confirmed and that allegedly show CJNG members operating armed drones, as well as material attributed to the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel.
Leak Emerges After Marco Rubio’s Tour
The leak became known shortly after Secretary of State Marco Rubio concluded a tour of Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, focused on regional security and the fight against drug trafficking.
The document’s contents come amid growing pressure from Washington on the Mexican government to take action against drug-trafficking cartels and a more aggressive stance by the U.S. government toward organizations linked to drug and migrant trafficking.
So far, the U.S. government has not officially announced plans to conduct unilateral operations inside Mexico.
