Pharmacy chains such as Farmacias del Ahorro, Farmacias Benavides, Farmacias San Pablo and Farmacias Guadalajara are the first to acquire the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.

“Once the first shipment of the updated Pfizer vaccine against COVID-19 arrived in Mexico on December 15, said biological will be available this week in the country’s main pharmacy chains for purchase,” the pharmaceutical company reported in a statement.

They explained that this represents the start of Pfizer’s marketing plan, which includes the distribution of the vaccine through different channels such as vaccination centers, vaccinating doctors, hospitals and, of course, authorized pharmacies.

On December 7, the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines received health registration approval from the Federal Commission for the Protection against Health Risks (COFEPRIS).

The approved vaccines are Spikevax, monovalent XBB.1.5, from ModernaTx, which requested its health registration through its legal representative in Mexico, Asofarma; and the Comirnaty vaccine, Ómicron XBB. 1.5, from Pfizer.

After the approval of these vaccines, Cofepris has called on the population to use them responsibly, that is, to only administer them under medical prescription.

It is expected that the doses will only be sold at health points with special licenses, which is why it will not be accessible in all pharmacies, said the National Chamber of the Pharmaceutical Industry (Canifarma).

How much will the COVID vaccine cost at the pharmacy?

Clinics such as Womedic and Healthec reported on their social networks about the availability of the vaccine, which is under medical supervision, with a cost ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 pesos.

In San Pablo they expect the application to begin on Friday at a cost of around one thousand pesos; At Farmacias del Ahorro the vaccine will be available starting tomorrow, Wednesday, December 20, with a price of 859 pesos, in 400 of the 1,800 that the chain has

“What we want to guarantee is the lowest price on the market, and the idea is that we will go out starting tomorrow with a total application price of 859 pesos with three months without interest for those who want it,” Gabriel Zavala said in an interview, commercial director of Farmacias del Ahorro.

He pointed out that it is not a product that patients can take with them, it must be applied in the pharmacy office, and there will be no home delivery service either, since there is no authorization from Cofepris to be able to do so, and the vaccine It requires being in a cold chain of minus 2 to minus 8 degrees Celsius.

“We have been applying the influenza vaccine for several years, with 45 thousand doses each year, for COVID we are expecting a significant number (…) And in the last couple of years we have tried others such as Herpes Zoster and some other infections that are not so popular,” Zavala said.
