Mineral de la Luz, a charming town in the capital of Guanajuato, has been named the first Magical Neighborhood of the state by the Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Mexico, Miguel Torruco Marqués. This recognition is part of a new initiative to promote and diversify the tourist attractions in the country, highlighting the emblematic spaces that preserve the essence of a locality, municipality or city.
Mineral de la Luz has a rich history and culture, dating back to its foundation in 1548, when it was discovered as a silver mine. The town’s name comes from the torches that were used to illuminate the mines during the extraction of the mineral. Today, it still retains its charm, with its cobblestone streets, adobe houses, old mines and beautiful architecture. Some of the attractions that visitors can enjoy are the church of San Pedro Apóstol, which has an impressive baroque facade; the plaza principal, which is a popular place to relax and enjoy the local atmosphere; and the old mines, some of which are still in operation.
Mineral de la Luz also has a strong tradition of festivities, such as the National Silver Fair and the Cristo Minero, which celebrate the town’s mining heritage and religious devotion. The town is also home to groups of Chichimecas, who have preserved their knowledge of herbal medicine through oral tradition.
The governor of Guanajuato, Diego Sinhue Rodríguez Vallejo, expressed his pride and gratitude for the nomination of Mineral de la Luz as a Magical Neighborhood, and assured that he will make it the most famous one in Mexico. He also invited the local authorities to join the initiative of Magical Routes of Color, which aims to make the town more colorful and picturesque with the painting of facades and artistic murals.
