Regular fuel reaches this minimum price for the sixth consecutive day in a station located in Río Bravo, Tamaulipas; for each liter of gasoline, this week the federal government applies a fiscal stimulus of 0.09 cents. At the end of 2017, gasoline prices were officially released throughout Mexico; that is, they stopped being capped by the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) and the doors were opened to the law of supply and demand.
Since then, gasoline prices at service stations are set based on the international market, which means that if in the rest of the world the fuel goes down or up, in parallel, it will also do so in Mexico.
The importance of this fuel remains such that without it, millions of people could not transport themselves every day to their workplaces, companies could not carry their goods from one place to another and practically all light means of transport would be stranded.
Due to its ease of use and ability to function in a wide range of temperatures, gasoline is the most widely used fuel for internal combustion vehicles. It is classified according to its octane level; that is, the ability of a fuel to resist compression before igniting. Thus, in Mexico two types of gasoline are marketed: Magna (or regular) and Premium. The first is less than 91 octanes and the second is equal to or greater than 91; the latter is in turn more expensive because its production requires a greater refining process.
But in addition, in the country the price of gasoline is added up to 6.16 pesos corresponding to the Special Tax on Production and Services (IEPS) and 16 percent of value added tax (VAT), which makes it even more expensive. This is where the Treasury intervenes with its fiscal stimulus policy.
In this way, to contain greater increases in the expenditure of Mexican families, each week the federal agency determines the amounts of the fiscal stimulus and the reduced IEPS quotas, as well as the amounts per liter applicable to these fuels.
Added to this, since January 2019 the Free Zone Program of the Northern Border (PZLFN) applies in 45 municipalities of the states of Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León and Tamaulipas, which among other benefits offers the reduction of the payment of VAT to 8 percent and income tax (ISR) to 20 percent, as well as the homologation of fuel prices with those of the United States.
Derived from the above, both Magna and Premium gasoline can be found at different prices at service stations in the country.
Cheaper gasoline Magna or regular gasoline reached a minimum price of 12.00 pesos per liter on Wednesday, January 31, 2024 for the sixth consecutive day at a service station located in Tamaulipas, according to data from the PETROIntelligence consultancy.
This gas station, with permission from the CRE PL / 10011 / EXP / ES / 2015, is located on Francisco I. Madero avenue with Poniente 5 S / N, in the municipality of Río Bravo, according to an analysis shared by the consultancy.
Gasoline in Guanajuato in this same municipality there is another service station located on Libramiento # 100, between Brecha 115 and Brecha 116, with permission from the CRE PL / 3810 / EXP / ES / 2015, which offers gasoline less than 91 octanes (regular) at 13.59 pesos per liter, according to the price platform reported by the permit holders of the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE).
While Premium gasoline reached a minimum price of 14.64 pesos per liter at a gas station located on Jilotepec avenue # 10105, with permission from the CRE PL / 5852 / EXP / ES / 2015, in Juárez, Chihuahua.
It should be noted that the three municipalities mentioned above are part of the PZLFN, so the fuel is cheaper than in the rest of the country.
Likewise, diesel, fuel used mainly by transporters, reached a minimum of 16.72 pesos per liter at a station, with permission from the CRE PL/11279/EXP/ES/2015, located in Barrio el Mirador S/N 400 meters from deviation, in Soledad Atzompa, Veracruz.
Where is the most expensive gasoline sold?
On the contrary, the Magna gasoline reached a maximum price of 25.99 pesos per liter at a gas station, with permission from the CRE PL/10170/EXP/ES/2015, located at kilometer 42 of the Guadalajara-La Barca highway, in Chapala, Jalisco.
Meanwhile, the gasoline greater than or equal to 91 octanes (Premium) more expensive is sold at 29.89 pesos per liter at a station, with permission from the CRE PL/7047/EXP/ES/2015, located at Ávila Camacho #999, in the municipality of Libres, Puebla. Regarding diesel, it reached a maximum of 27.44 per liter at a service station, with permission from the CRE PL/7505/EXP/ES/2015, located at kilometer 157.1 of the Oaxaca-Puerto road section, in San Juan Lachao, Oaxaca.
Average price of gasoline in Mexico TODAY As of 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, Magna gasoline is sold at an average price of 22.61 pesos per liter, according to information from PETROIntelligence.
On the other hand, at the national level, Premium gasoline is sold at an average of 24.26 pesos per liter; and diesel at 24.49 pesos.
The SHCP returned last Friday a part of the fiscal stimulus that is applied to the tax on Magna gasoline, after its elimination in November of last year, according to the agreement published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) the same day.
This means that, from January 27 to February 2, 2024, drivers are paying less for each liter of regular gasoline they buy at the service stations, since for the first time this year a stimulus of 0.09 cents is applied.
What gasoline do I put in my car?
According to the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy of the US Department of Energy, drivers should use the octane grade required by the manufacturer of their vehicle, so it is recommended to check the user manual.
However, he points out, most gasoline vehicles were designed to use 87 octanes, although some are designed to use a higher octane.
“A higher octane is required for engines that have a higher compression ratio and / or use superchargers or turbochargers to force more air into the engine. The increase in pressure in the cylinder allows the engine to extract more mechanical energy from the mixture given by the air / gasoline, but requires a fuel with a higher octane to prevent the mixture from detonating prematurely, “he explains. If by mistake or ignorance the owner of the vehicle uses gasoline of lower octane than required, it can cause the engine to have a lower performance and over time damage the emission control, warns the office.
In the case of new cars, this situation could void their warranty, while in older vehicles the engines could produce a knocking or audible tinkling. “Many newer vehicles can adjust in time to reduce such knocking, but suffer losses of power in the engine and in gasoline savings,” he adds.
