According to the Mexico Peace Index in its 2024 edition, Durango is the fourth most peaceful state in the country, and compared to the previous year, during 2023 there was an improvement in security indices of 8.9 percent, this It meant an increase of two positions compared to 2022, when it was in sixth position of the 32 entities in the country.
According to this measurement that refers to the overall peace score at the national level, for the third consecutive year, the state had an improvement and thus managed to place itself among the five best qualified, in the midst of an insecurity crisis that plagues the country.
The study talks about a 32.3 percent decrease in the homicide rate, that is, 5.3 deaths per one hundred thousand inhabitants at the state level, while in the case of the municipality of Gómez Palacio specifically, it reported the fifth lowest homicide rate of the main municipalities nationwide and Durango capital number 22.
Another of the crimes that had the greatest decrease was those involving the use of a firearm and which, according to statistics, had a 50 percent reduction in the crimes committed, that is, 3.8 crimes per one hundred thousand inhabitants; This is related to the 39.7 percent decrease in homicides committed with a firearm and the 62 percent decrease in assaults committed with it.
The latest edition of the Mexico Peace Index coincides with the statistics presented a few weeks ago by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), considering that the people of Durango feel safer, since the percentage of inhabitants who think that the state is dangerous fell from 56 to 51.7 percent between 2022 and 2023.
In this sense, Durango had the second greatest improvement in the decrease in the rate of violent crimes in the country, since it had a decrease of 12.8 percent, this derived from the reduction in the four sub-indicators of violent crimes, “the change The most significant was a 56% decrease in the robbery rate,” reads the analysis carried out.
Organized crime is perhaps one of the criminal activities that in recent years has generated the greatest perception of insecurity in the country, however during 2023 for this entity it represented a decrease of 13.5 percent in the global rate of organized crime, an improvement that says “can be mainly attributed to a 39.9% decrease in the extortion rate,” this despite the fact that subindicators of organized crime activities, major crimes and drug dealing, increased by 27.7 and 8.9 percent respectively.
The observatory warns that the increase in tranquility in Durango coincides with the change in organizations dedicated to drug trafficking, which have abandoned the trafficking of drugs of plant origin, for those of synthetic manufacture, such as fentanyl.
Just with Chihuahua and Sinaloa, Durango is part of the area known as the “golden triangle”, which according to the organization in charge of carrying out the study, these communities “have moved further and further away from the production of narcotics and have dedicated to sustainable forestry, which has contributed to improving peace in the state.”
Remember that the Mexico Peace Index is dedicated to providing a complete overview and a broad approach of the factors through which peace is built, under the analysis of eight pillars of positive peace such as low levels of corruption, good relations with neighbors, well-functioning government, equitable distribution of resources, free flow of information, sound business environment, high level of human capital and acceptance of the rights of others.
