Due to the presence of coliform bacteria in various purified water dispensers in the Campeche municipalities of Calkiní and Ciudad del Carmen, as well as in the capital of the entity, which are dedicated to selling it in jugs for human consumption, the authorities of the Commission State for Protection Against Health Risks issued an alert and suspended establishments.

Baltazar Arceo, manager of health operations in Campeche, explained that surveillance has been intensified at the purification plants, as well as at the dispatchers of the vital liquid, and that as soon as they do not comply with health measures, they are suspended.

According to citizen Claudia Contreras, there are many sick people in that state in the southeast of the country due to the sale and consumption of contaminated water.

The presence of fecal coliform bacteria is an indicator of water quality, since its presence is related to that of several pathogens, which are more difficult to detect, such as salmonella, shigella and vibrio, which cause gastroenteritis, dysentery, typhoid and cholera, Therefore, in the presence of these bacteria, health authorities intensify surveillance in these businesses to avoid a possible outbreak of stomach diseases.

Closure of plants and water distributors.

Arceo detailed the process for suspension: first, a sample is taken, and if it is positive with coliforms, a second test is carried out in quintuplicate, leaving one for the owner, one for a witness and one for the health authority.

For his part, the owner has to send his sample to the public health laboratory and if three samples come back bad, it is closed.

The Commission for the Protection Against Sanitary Risks of Campeche urged the population to avoid consuming drinking water of dubious origin, which, despite being economical, can bring various health risks.

Meanwhile, residents expressed that poor water treatment can bring serious health risks, as Wilberth Chab said.

For health, it is dangerous, we should take that into account and be very careful when drinking the water.
