In the early hours, armed groups clash in Pantelhó, Chiapas: One dead confirmed

The Attorney General’s Office of the State of Chiapas confirmed one death after an armed confrontation in Pantelhó, scene of multiple crimes in recent days

Pantelhó, Chiapas.- A new crime was reported in Pantelhó, region of Chiapas where a few days ago, hitmen allegedly killed an entire family (information denied by the head of the Mexican Federal Executive, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) in one of their press conferences). Now, this armed attack was confirmed by the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) and is already being investigated.

This is a confrontation between alleged armed groups in the region, which left one man dead. According to the first reports from the Chiapas authorities, the events occurred yesterday morning, Sunday, May 26, 2024, around 9:00 a.m. local time, in the San Antonio neighborhood, located in the municipality of Pantelhó.
The FGE detailed, through a bulletin, that, during the first hours of the day, residents reported multiple gun detonations, which is why the Code Red was activated and elements from different orders of the Federal Government and the State of Chiapas were mobilized. In the aforementioned area, the authorities found a man who had several injuries caused by a firearm projectile.

Officers from the Investigative Police and the Chiapas State Police were in charge of cordoning off the area of the attack, as well as beginning the first investigations into the crime. Anonymous witnesses indicated that an armed attack broke out in said area between two groups from the region, which left one man dead. The alleged perpetrators, however, fled to an unknown direction.

Later, Expert Services personnel from the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Chiapas were present to collect the ballistic evidence, process it and integrate it into a new investigation folder; Likewise, the experts were in charge of lifting the body of the now deceased, who remains unknown.

The FGE Indigenous Justice Prosecutor’s Office announced the start of an investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible for this violent confrontation. Meanwhile, the National Electoral Institute (INE) has expressed its concern about the escalation of violence in that municipality, pointing out that local elections are at risk due to continued clashes. The Federal Government, for its part, assured that there will be security on June 2nd.
