Get ready for the worst heat wave of the year. We tell you when it starts and how to prepare to face it.
Prepare light clothing, the heatwave of 2024 is coming! Although we cannot have exact dates, between the months of July and August, the strongest heat waves of the year occur, reaching over 45º C in some parts of the country. The set of waves of extreme heat is known as a heat wave.
The period is characterized by low rainfall, excessive heating of the air, clear skies and low precipitation.
Why does rain decrease during the canicula? Because the wind that blows from the east, also known as trade winds, prevents the formation of clouds over the ocean to a certain extent.
It is approximately in the middle of July, although it varies year to year in summer, when the 40 hottest days of the year occur. If the natural cycle is not altered, the rainy season will begin later.
The effects of the heat wave are strongly felt in the following states:
Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala, Puebla, State of Mexico, Morelos, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Tabasco, Chiapas, Campeche, Yucatán, Quintana Roo and Mexico City.
When does the 2024 canicula begin?
Another name for the 2024 dog days is intrasummer, mid-summer or summer drought, since it depends on various atmospheric conditions and its duration can vary, even extending until September. It happens shortly after the summer solstice, which will occur in 2024 on Thursday, June 20 at 10:51 p.m.
Among the recommendations to the population are the following:
Stay hydrated
Use sunblock
Not to expose to sun radiation
Exercising outdoors only in the hours around dawn or dusk
Wear light clothing
Cover up with long sleeves
Why is it called canicula?
The summer heat wave is known as dog days, attributed to the constellation Canis Major (Canis Maior) or Dog Days for the Romans. In ancient times it was thought that the heat of the sun combined with the star Sirius (the brightest), resulting in an increase in temperature.
