Youtuber Yulay traveled this road a few months ago to show what the experience of traveling on it is like

The Mexican YouTuber Yulay crossed “The Devil’s Backbone”, a highway that connects Mazatlán with Durango and is considered one of the most dangerous roads in Mexico and the world due to its traffic conditions. This space is located at kilometer 168 of highway 40. The name of this place is taken because, upon reaching the viewpoint, you can see two rock formations that resemble the horns of a demonic figure.
Yulay mentions that the recommendations prior to crossing this highway are to have a full tank, make sure that all the batteries are 100% charged and have a lot of patience and calm to go through the more than a thousand curves in a journey of almost 5 hours.
The main problem with this road is the number and characteristics of the curves. There are some that are so sharp that they require invading the lane that goes in the opposite direction, so coordination with the cars that circulate is essential to survive the transfer. It should be noted that the highway only has two lanes; One way and one way back.
The highest point is 2,750 meters above sea level, so any fall is fatal. Some truck drivers claim to have seen ghosts crossing this road. Local legends mention that the place is cursed, so it does not let souls out. Even one of the myths surrounding the mysticism of the road claims that, at some point during construction, the devil himself appeared to ask for souls. These were given to him little by little, as shown by the multiple crosses distributed in the places where people had accidents.
Finally, depending on the weather conditions, this road can become much more dangerous. Because, at times, the road is filled with fog that prevents drivers from correctly distinguishing the lanes and curves. The asphalt, however, is perfect; not a single pothole can be seen.
