At least 144 millimeters of water fell in more than 12 hours of constant rain in southern Tamaulipas. One person died in this region of Tamaulipas. Crocodile sightings were reported in several regions of the metropolitan area of Tampico and hundreds of people were partially cut off because the streets turned into rivers and the basement of the IMSS hospital was flooded.
Municipal authorities confirmed the death of an elderly woman after she was sweeping a puddle on her balcony and an electric shock took her life; the events were recorded in the Guadalupe Victoria neighborhood in the southern area of Tampico about 300 meters from the Pánuco River that divides Tamaulipas from Veracruz.
The extraordinary rains recorded by the impact of tropical storm Chris in Veracruz territory caused more than 10 hours of torrential and constant rainfall in southern Tamaulipas, causing various roads in Altamira, Ciudad Madero and Tampico to be flooded, even the sighting of crocodiles was reported in sectors such as Miramapolis, in the vicinity of Miramar Beach; in the Heriberto Kehoe neighborhood, as well as in Unidad Nacional and Las Flores, the presence of these reptiles was reported.
After the intense rainfall recorded in the conurbation, specifically in Tampico, caused various effects, forcing the personnel of Civil Protection and the Secretariat of Public Services of the city council to implement an operation in the affected sectors to provide support to the citizens.
The head of Municipal Civil Protection, Pedro Romero Sánchez, announced that, on the instructions of Mayor Chucho Nader, work crews were placed in the Laguna del Carpintero urban park to carry out cleaning tasks, since the heavy rain that lasted during the night of Sunday and early Monday morning, resulted in partial overflows of this aquifer.
The torrential rains also caused havoc in the basement of the Regional Hospital number 6 of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS), in Ciudad Madero. As in every storm, for more than a decade, IMSS workers have suffered to enter and leave the hospital because the access to their workplace was flooded early in the night.
However, the IMSS did not report the suspension of services, nor the evacuation of patients, because they activated civil protection protocols and managed to control the flooding that temporarily affected access to the staff, kitchen, and laboratory area. The IMSS reported that the flooding is now in the past.
