After dozens of Mexicans left Chiapas due to violence and crossed the border into Guatemala, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) reported that, through the Mexican Embassy in Guatemala, assistance is being provided to the compatriots.

The SRE indicated that also, through the consulate in Quetzaltenango, support is being provided to Mexicans who are in the Department of Huehuetenango, in Guatemala, “providing immediate protection to women, children and elderly people.”

Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo confirmed on Wednesday that almost 600 Mexicans crossed the Guatemalan border in search of refuge, fleeing the violence that is ravaging southern Mexico.

The Mexican consul in Quetzaltenango, Víctor Manuel Jiménez Segovia, moved to establish direct communication with the compatriots to resolve requests for consular assistance and protection, which range from health requirements, clothing and, in some cases, requests to return to Mexico.
