Mexico sent 200 members of its elite Special Forces Corps, part of the Mexican Army, to the state of Sinaloa on Friday to reinforce security, according to a statement from Mexico’s National Defense Secretariat.

The elite members will work with local authorities in Sinaloa to reduce “illicit activities of criminal groups” in the state and ensure order and public peace, the National Defense said.

The announcement comes after the United States arrested Sinaloa cartel leaders Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada Garcia and Joaquin Guzman Lopez on Thursday.

“Military personnel will act firmly at all times, carrying out tasks of deterrence, prevention, patrolling, reconnaissance and establishing military security posts that generate an environment of tranquility,” the statement said.

The Sinaloa cartel was formed in the state in the late 1980s and is one of the most powerful criminal groups in the world, raking in billions of dollars annually by trafficking drugs to the United States and around the world.
