Campeche City Hall Files Constitutional Controversy Over Tren Maya

Alejandro Durán Reyes, the legal director of Campeche City Hall, announced a constitutional controversy against the state government and local Congress for overstepping municipal functions by amending the Public Works Law to allow the Light Rail, a complementary project to the Tren Maya, to be built without licenses.

Acting Mayor Martha Camacho Sánchez expressed concerns about potential issues like flooding, traffic, urban image changes, and infrastructure failures due to the lack of comprehensive project details and impact studies.

Governor Layda Sansores San Román criticized the municipal government’s actions, emphasizing the project’s social impact and federal support, and vowed to continue the work despite bureaucratic hurdles.

On July 10, legislators approved a reform exempting major public works from needing construction licenses, highlighting the project’s significant state and municipal benefits.
