A Tesla vehicle illegally connected to a public power pole caused the fire of the car and a house in Tijuana, Baja California, on Monday.

According to preliminary reports from the fire department, the electric vehicle was connected to the public power supply using an unauthorized connection. The events occurred in a neighborhood in the Playas area, near the border with the United States.

The incident caught the attention of residents because the vehicle was connected using a ‘diablito’, as illegal connections to power outlets on public roads are known, and because of the type of car it was, not so common in the city.

“This is something unusual that we have to see for the first time, seeing a Tesla on fire,” said Arturo Sánchez, Fire Coordinator who attended the incident.

He noted that although these electric vehicles are not common, they had been previously prepared to attend to any incident that had to do with them.

“These are vehicles that really represent great challenges for firefighters, especially because of the risk and the large amount of water that has to be used to put out the flames in a vehicle like these,” said the firefighter.

According to his data and a first analysis, the fire was caused by the illegal connection to the electric power pole, which from the beginning “already envisioned a risk because electric vehicles, mainly Tesla, are very special and due to their characteristics, all those details must be taken care of.”

He reiterated that, in light of this, in Tijuana, the fire department has been insisting on the training and formation of agents for the proper attention to incidents in these vehicles, since “it is essential to know how to maneuver in these cases with electric power to avoid an accident between colleagues.”

According to the firefighter, the house that also caught fire was uninhabited, so no injuries were reported, and the fire was contained in time so that it did not spread to neighboring houses.
