An individual stole an ambulance in Brownsville, Texas, and recklessly headed toward Matamoros, Tamaulipas, evading the surveillance of the North American and Mexican authorities, leaving behind a series of damages at the checkpoints on both borders.
Finally, the unit was abandoned in the free zone of Mexican territory.
The police department of Brownsville, Texas, reported that the events occurred at 07:05 hours on Sunday when they received an emergency call on International Boulevard, the main artery that connects to the international crossing “Puente Nuevo.”
The help was for a man who felt ill and asked to be taken to a hospital.
“An individual, who later became a suspect, had complained of abdominal pain and asked to be transported to the hospital. The suspect unexpectedly jumped into the driver’s seat of the ambulance and drove away from the scene,” the police department’s statement said.
After gaining control, he headed to the border strip at full speed.
A video shows how the ambulance, with its doors open, collides with the granite barriers that serve as speed bumps and with the boom.
The American officers shot at the suspect, but he continued on his way to do the same at the Mexican customs where he threw the gate.
Even with a flat tire, the unit entered Matamoros and 25 minutes from the international bridge it was abandoned.
For its part, the Tamaulipas security spokesperson reported that upon learning of what had happened, search protocols were activated to find it.
“The corresponding protocols were activated and later the reported unit was located in a state of abandonment near the San Joaquín Funeral Park. Authorities proceeded to secure it and make it available to the corresponding corporations,” it detailed.
After the respective agreements, the ambulance crossed back to Brownsville.
The identity of the individual and other details are unknown at the moment.
