Beekeepers are confident that honey production in Campeche will level off this month. Alongside the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader), they are exploring new marketing opportunities. On another note, bee mortality concerns them, as they attribute it to the climate.
With the hope that honey production in Campeche will stabilize during August, even if it doesn’t reach last year’s figures, the Sader delegate, Francisco García Manilla, confirmed their efforts to find new markets for honey sales.
Regarding the export of Campeche honey, he mentioned that they are currently supplying Germany. However, in collaboration with Miel y Cera de Campeche and beekeepers from Champotón, they are actively seeking additional markets. They are also working on product diversification to add value.
García Manilla explained, ‘What Campeche and Mérida sometimes do is send bulk honey abroad, combining it with other lower-quality honeys. From this blend, they create a higher-quality honey with better taste and texture. This is the challenge we face, and it can only be achieved if beekeepers participate. I hope we can accomplish this goal this year.’
He emphasized that Saudi Arabia only accepts pure honey, not blends, while Dubai and some other countries buy whatever is available. Therefore, efforts are being made to enhance packaging, branding, and meet the current market demand.
‘It’s not just about honey; it’s also about propolis and other products that have a higher value than honey,’ he added.
Regarding bee mortality, the federal official acknowledged its connection to the climate. He suggested that farmers coordinate chemical dispersal in the afternoon and notify beekeepers to avoid future problems resulting from a lack of harmony between agriculture and apiculture.
Another issue is controlled burns. García Manilla emphasized the need for communication. Farmers sometimes burn small areas, assuming it won’t cause significant harm. However, without notifying the Municipal Presidency or the National Forestry Commission (Conafor), fires can escalate.
In conclusion, García Manilla stated that Campeche has a registry of eight thousand beekeepers between Miel y Cera de Campeche and Champotón. However, they estimate there may be around a thousand more across the entire state. Taking authoritative actions is essential for the sector’s well-being.”
