Japanese authorities are warning of a mega-earthquake that could hit this country soon and whose intensity could hit other nations a few days after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake was felt in this territory.

The warning of the mega-earthquake was issued this Tuesday by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA, for its acronym in English), which sends notifications to the cell phones of people in the region and which were picked up by international media such as CNN in the United States and AS in Chile.

“The possibility of a high-intensity earthquake occurring is higher than normal, but this does not indicate that a mega-earthquake will occur with certainty,” said this Japanese entity.
Japan Meteorological Agency raises questions about volcanic activity:

Since its implementation after the devastating earthquake in 2011 in Japan, the alert system had never issued a statement warning of this type of risk.

The Japanese government has estimated that there is a 70 percent chance that a mega-earthquake will hit the country in the next 30 years, which could affect a significant part of Japan’s Pacific coast and threaten some 300,000 people, according to its experts.

Which countries could be affected by the Japanese mega-earthquake?

Earthquakes in Japan are usually a major issue in Mexico and other countries in the so-called Ring of Fire, which concerns coastal nations with the Pacific Ocean, such as:

Chile
Peru
Colombia
Mexico
United States (West Coast)
Australia
Philippines
Japan

Although seismic waves cannot reach the American continent, it is expected that the waves within the Pacific will change significantly after the passage of this mega-earthquake.

In the case of Peru, the executive president of the Geophysical Institute, Hernando Tavera, said in an interview with Radio Programas de Perú (RPP) that an earthquake of magnitude 8.8 that occurs off the central coast is high, although he did not specify the date on which it would happen.

“It could be in a year, 50 years, 100 years, but the earthquake is going to happen. What is sought here is that, with this information, we really begin to prepare ourselves,” said Tavera in an interview with RPP.
For their part, the Mexican authorities have not spoken out regarding this phenomenon although constant earthquakes have been reported in Pacific coastal states such as Oaxaca and Guerrero with less than a magnitude of 5, almost imperceptible in the metropolitan area.
