Following the announcement by the next president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, on the construction of the Pánuco-Monterrey aqueduct, the Secretary of Hydraulic Resources in Tamaulipas, Raúl Quiroga Álvarez, indicated that it is a viable project and they are waiting for the date to meet with authorities from Nuevo León, Veracruz, and San Luis Potosí.
“It is an issue that obviously must go through an agreement between governors and they will give us the instruction, but it must be discussed as soon as possible.”
He indicated that Tamaulipas will participate in the special work team to determine the viability of the construction of the Pánuco-Monterrey aqueduct, together with the National Commission of the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development and authorities from the governments of Nuevo León, Veracruz and San Luis Potosí.
“The technical analysis is my responsibility, the economic and financial analysis is the responsibility of the corresponding authorities, but from a technical point of view it is clear to us that a perfectly viable project that is feasible, is an account that offers enough availability to take to another basin that does not have water, it is a technically viable project.”
Regarding the contamination of the Pánuco River and the damage that it could cause if the aqueduct is built, he mentioned that these measures to avoid discharges of raw water would be taken as part of the project.
“Remember that it comes from the State of Mexico, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Veracruz, Hidalgo, it comes with water discharges that would be in any case an issue that should be observed as a region and try to take the necessary measures so that there are no discharges of raw water into the Pánuco River.”
