President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) revealed this Wednesday that he will send a letter to his American counterpart, Joe Biden, to denounce interference by the United States Government in matters that “only correspond to the sovereignty of the country.”

“I am going to send a letter to the President of the United States, to President Biden on this issue (interference), and in addition the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is going to make a diplomatic note on the same subject because we consider that there is open interference by the United States Government in matters that only correspond to the sovereignty of our country,” said the president.

The Mexican ruler pointed this out in his daily press conference just minutes after Pablo Gómez, head of the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF), revealed the money that the civil organization Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity (MCCI) supposedly receives from the United States.

According to the UIF report, the non-profit organization, which has denounced corruption scandals of the current government that include officials and children of López Obrador, obtains resources both nationally and internationally through voluntary contributions and tax-deductible donations for the donor.

According to Gómez, income for MCCI began to be recorded from 2016, and until 2023 totaled an amount of just over 502.58 million pesos (26.7 million dollars); while from 2017 to 2023 it received just over 13 million pesos (690,000 dollars) from accounts from the United States.

Given this, López Obrador also said that he will ask the tax attorney, Grisel Galeano, to carry out a review together with the Tax Administration System (SAT) to see if the donations that MCCI receives comply with what the laws establish.

“We still have time to make some modifications, to present bills so that it is not with the people’s own resources that campaigns are carried out against the interests of the majority of Mexicans,” he said.

In addition, he said that when taxes are deducted for donations, the income does not reach the Public Treasury and “cannot be used for the development of the country.”

In 2023, the United States Agency for International Development (Usaid) of the Government of the North American country admitted the financing of more than 6 million dollars to MCCI, an organization founded by businessman Claudio X. González, an open opponent of the Government of López Obrador.
