The mayor of Los Cabos, Oscar Leggs Castro, highlighted with satisfaction that the municipality has managed to position itself as the third place at the national level in terms of perception of security, according to the most recent data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI). This achievement underlines the effectiveness of the strategies implemented by local authorities to maintain order and security in this tourist region of Baja California Sur.
Daily strategies for security in Los Cabos
During a press conference, Leggs Castro detailed the importance of daily coordination between local authorities to address the security challenges of the municipality. “Every day at seven in the morning, a security meeting is held in the Cabo San Lucas delegation, located in the Naval Zone. It is in this forum where we analyze the security situation of our municipality,” explained the mayor, emphasizing that this morning meeting allows authorities to be informed and react quickly to any eventuality.
Leggs Castro stressed that the key to these results lies in constant communication and collaboration between the various government agencies. «We have a security chat in which all relevant actors participate, which facilitates perfect coordination between the different levels of government,» he added.
Los Cabos, an example at the national level
The National Urban Security Survey (ENSU) of INEGI, corresponding to the second quarter of 2024, positions Los Cabos as the third city with the lowest perception of insecurity in the entire country, with an index of just 16.7%. This figure is only surpassed by San Pedro Garza García, with 11.7%, and Piedras Negras, with 14.3%.
Contrast with other Mexican cities
In contrast, the same study reveals that the cities of Fresnillo, Naucalpan de Juárez and Uruapan top the list of cities with the highest perception of insecurity, with alarming rates of 94.7%, 89.2% and 86.8% respectively. This panorama highlights the disparity in the effectiveness of security policies between different regions of the country.
In concluding his speech, Leggs Castro emphasized that these results reinforce citizens’ confidence in local authorities and in the constant effort to maintain Los Cabos as one of the safest destinations in Mexico. “We will continue working with the same determination so that Los Cabos continues to be a benchmark of security and peace for all its inhabitants and visitors,” he concluded.
