Residents of the municipality of Ángel Albino Corzo, near the border between Chiapas and Guatemala, were forced by criminal groups to block roads and confront army troops.

After more than 24 hours of threats, blockades with ditches and trucks driven across, as well as detention of soldiers, whose camp had its power cut off, the residents confronted the military elements at various points in the municipality who had entered to rescue their companions.

At one of these points, some protesters assured the Army that they were being forced by hitmen to block them.

“It is our family that is at risk, it is not our fault, we are hostages, and if we do not come, our family will be taken,” accused one of the residents, as recorded in a video of one of the skirmishes.

That municipality is allegedly dominated by the Sinaloa Cartel (CDS), which maintains a dispute throughout the region against the so-called Chiapas and Guatemala Cartel, made up of deserters from the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG).

“They force us to come, we have family that is in danger,” said another resident of the area located about 80 miles from the southern border.

Until last night, no civil authority had commented on these incidents, where there were also shootouts due to the entry of soldiers into this city of just over 31,000 inhabitants.

Just last July, hundreds of residents abandoned their homes in municipalities such as Motozintla, Amatenango de la Frontera and Comalapa to flee to Guatemala, after weeks of blockades and threats by criminal groups.
