Bad weather affects 70% of restaurants in Campeche

During the summer of 2024, Campeche restaurants increased their sales by up to 50%, but the rains reduced customer traffic by up to 70%.

The summer vacation season of 2024 has benefited the restaurant sector in the state capital, reporting an increase of between 40 and 50 percent in food and beverage sales. However, the afternoon and evening rains have reduced customer traffic in these businesses by up to 70 percent.

According to Abraham Azar Wabi, president of the Association of Entrepreneurs of 59th Street and Historic Center A.C., since the start of the current vacation period, between June 15 and 20, Campeche restaurateurs have observed an increase in their sales of up to 50 percent.

Both locals and national tourists take advantage of the school break and the fact that their children are not attending educational centers to go out for family dinners, or older youths go out to have fun with friends, generating significant economic benefits for local commerce.

“We have seen a lot of foreign tourism, groups, families, people from all over the world, from French, Italian, Dutch, to recently groups of Koreans. It has been a good vacation season,” said the representative of the restaurateurs in the city’s main area. However, he acknowledged that the seasonal rains are causing significant economic impacts, not only for food and beverage businesses but for all sectors that make up the association, as most people avoid going out when there is ‘bad weather.’

“It happens a lot that local customers don’t go out, and it gets a bit more complicated. In the end, during these seasons, we rely on tourism that has to go out to shop, eat, visit tourist attractions, and it helps all the merchants in the city because it’s money that stays in the state,” he emphasized.

Finally, Azar Wabi said that, one day before the official end of this year’s summer vacation, in general, the members of the Association of Entrepreneurs of 59th Street and Historic Center A.C. did well, but he reiterated that the afternoon rains cause their sales to drop by between 60 and 70 percent.
