In the Tampico metropolitan area, September 4 is celebrated as the Day of the Torta de la Barda, a typical dish from the south of Tamaulipas. For this reason, several businesses will give away cakes and organize food contests, in addition to having live music for the celebration. We give you the details below.
Through social networks, “Tortas de la Barda René y su hijo Cepillín”, in addition to “Tortas Lalo” announced to their diners that they will be giving away, respectively, 300 and 200 tortas de la barda of different sizes.
To take advantage of the promotion of “Tortas de la Barda René y su hijo Cepillín” and receive one of the 300 mini cakes that will be offered, it is necessary to go to the branch in the Centro area, dressed in yellow or green.
At “Tortas Lalo,” the first 200 people to arrive at the establishment, also located in the Centro area, starting at 8:30 a.m., will receive 100 full-size tortas and 100 children’s-size tortas.
Both places will organize a food contest to see who can eat the most tortas in the shortest time. Prizes for the first three places will consist of financial stipends.
What do we know about the tortas de la barda?
According to previous reports from this publishing house, our story begins in 1928, on a wall between the Historic Center and the Tampico Customs House, when José María Bracamontes, a native of Michoacán, began selling sardine tortas with beans, pico de gallo, and green sauce.
Later, Bracamontes changed the sardine for mortadella to vary the recipe. However, after going to the old Zaragoza Market, he preferred ham over mortadella and also included pork cheese.
Later, he added white cheese and chorizo, since they were popular products on the train tracks. Finally, he included chicharrón in green sauce, to create the dish we know today.
During the celebrations of September 4, on the occasion of the Day of the Torta de la Barda, establishments in the Center of Tampico will give away tortas to a limited number of diners, who will be able to savor the dish to the rhythm of the music.
